Reflection: Halfway Check-In

Reaching the halfway point of the WPCredits program has given me the opportunity to look back at everything I have learned and the progress I have made since I started.

When I first joined the program, my main goal was to become familiar with WordPress, understand how its open-source community works, and find a way to contribute using something I already enjoy doing.

After exploring the different contribution teams, I chose the WordPress Photos Team because photography is one of my favorite activities.

I wanted to share original photographs from Costa Rica and, at the same time, learn about the contribution process and how my work could become useful to other people.

My progress so far

During the first part of the program, I worked on creating my WordPress profile, joining the community through Slack, and becoming familiar with the learning platform.

I also spent time creating and customizing my personal WordPress website. I explored different themes, fonts, layouts, and design options until I found a style that better represented my personality and interests.

That process helped me understand more about website customization and how WordPress can be used to build a personal online presence.

However, one of the most important achievements has been starting my contributions to the WordPress Photo Directory.

So far, I have seven photographs published in the official directory.

These contributions are especially meaningful to me because they combine my interest in photography with the opportunity to participate in an international community.

Comparing my progress with my initial goals

At the beginning, I was mainly focused on understanding the platform and choosing an appropriate contribution team.

Now, I have gone beyond the initial preparation stage and started sharing actual content with the community.

I still have more to learn, but I feel that I am making progress toward the goals I established when I joined the program.

Challenges and lessons learned

One of the challenges has been becoming familiar with the different parts of the WordPress ecosystem. At first, understanding the differences between WordPress.org, WordPress.com, Learn WordPress, and the contribution teams required some attention.

Another important learning experience has been understanding that publishing content in a community directory is different from sharing photographs on personal social media.

There are guidelines, licensing considerations, and quality requirements that contributors need to respect.

To continue improving, I have been using the learning resources available through the program and gaining practical experience as I work on my contributions.

What comes next?

For the second half of the program, I want to continue developing my contributions to the Photos Team.

I would like to upload more original photographs, especially aerial views, natural landscapes, and images that represent different places in Costa Rica.

I also want to improve my descriptions in English, continue learning about the photo review process, and become more familiar with the activities of the WordPress community.

Another goal is to keep updating my personal website and documenting what I learn throughout the program.

Final reflection

Looking back, I can see that this experience has been about much more than learning how to use WordPress.

It has helped me understand the importance of collaboration, open-source projects, and sharing resources with other people.

Knowing that my photographs are now available through an international platform is something that motivates me to continue contributing.

I still have several things to learn, but I am satisfied with the progress I have made so far and look forward to continuing this experience.
