My First Contribution to WordPress

One of the most interesting parts of participating in the WPCredits program has been moving from learning about WordPress to actually contributing something to the community.

After choosing the Photos Team, my next step was to understand how the WordPress Photo Directory works and what kind of photographs can be shared.

The Photos Team Handbook and the submission guidelines are important resources for learning about image quality, originality, and licensing. One thing that caught my attention was the use of the CC0 license, which allows other people to use the photographs freely.

Since photography is already one of my personal interests, I decided to start with images from my own collection.

I enjoy photographing landscapes, nature, and different places around Costa Rica. I also like using drones to capture aerial views, because they allow me to show familiar places from a different perspective.

My contribution process involves selecting original photographs, checking their quality, preparing descriptions in English, and submitting them through the official WordPress Photos platform.

Although uploading a photograph may seem like a simple task, contributing to a public directory requires paying attention to details. It is important to understand the submission requirements and make sure the images are suitable for other people to use.

One of the most satisfying results of this experience is that I now have seven photographs published in the official WordPress Photo Directory.

Seeing my photographs available to the community has been motivating. These are images I originally captured because I enjoy photography, and now they can be useful to other people around the world.

Another part of the experience has been learning how the WordPress community communicates and collaborates. Through the WPCredits program, I have become familiar with Slack, the Make WordPress teams, and the resources available to contributors.

I am still learning how the Photos Team organizes its activities and reviews contributions. I would like to better understand the review process and what I can do to improve my future submissions.

This first experience has helped me understand that contributing to open source is not limited to writing code. Sharing original photographs can also be a valuable contribution.

I am happy with the progress so far, and I plan to continue submitting more photographs, especially images that show the landscapes, nature, and beauty of Costa Rica.
